Eviction At The Port Authority Terminal
26" x 39.5", mixed media
Often in the bustle of commuters,
the homeless would line
the walls and fill the cubbyholes for
refuge. They could usually count on
the bus and train terminals as a
"safe" place. At the time of the
Democratic Convention, the Mayor
suddenly became compelled to clean
up New York's midtown area. Using
the usual allegations of crime and
mental disability, this shanty-town
was an embarrassment that had to
be removed. All the cardboard shacks
were removed with belongings being
hosed down. No vagrants were
allowed to lay down or dawdle too
long. If they did, they were dragged
away. In short, even in a public place,
the homeless were evicted, again.
