Man Tied To A Door
34.5" x 19.5, mixed media.
In homage to work done by Haitian Artist Philome Obin,
this work depicts Charlemagne Péralte's brutal death
on November 19, 1919. Péralte was falsely arrested for
siding
with guerrillas during the first American occupation of
Haiti.
While in prison, he vowed revenge for the injustice done
to him.
Ironically, he became a prominent guerrilla leader only
after his escape.
He was gunned down and his body was tied to a door and
planted
in the mud as a warning.
Man Tied To A Door is a tribute to a man
"crucified" in the manner of
Jesus Christ, for defending his freedom from the unjust
intrusion and false
accusations from a foreign influence in one's homeland.
